Page from Plenas: 12 Grabados, a book of Puerto Rican folk songs, with an illustration of the plena “Cortaron a Elena” (which translates to “They Stabbed Elena”) and the melody with lyrics. Only the chorus and the first verse of the song are included in this book. The song tells the story of Elena, a young woman who was stabbed by her suitor/lover. Plenas are also known as “el periodico canta’o” or “the sung newspaper.”
